Mobile IV Stocking — When Q8001 Is Primary and Q8000 Is Backup

Mobile IV teams win on predictable tote weight, cooler space, and finish-clean protocols. For many hydration-style menus, Braun EXCEL Q8001 (0.9% NaCl 500 mL) is the right primary bag (Baxter VIAFLEX volume-equivalent: 2B1323Q) and Braun EXCEL Q8000 (0.9% NaCl 1,000 mL) (or Baxter 2B1324X) is the backup—not the default filler.

This article is for mobile IV operators and procurement leads. It is operational stocking guidance—not clinical protocols. Both SKUs may be Rx-gated; confirm live PDPs and account credentials before packing fluids into a “supplies” tote.

Why 500 mL often wins on the road

  • Weight and cube: More completed visits per cooler load when modal protocols finish on 500 mL.
  • Waste: Short visits leave fewer half-bags than a 1,000 mL default.
  • Swap discipline: One primary size trains staff; backup size is intentional, not mixed randomly in every tote.

Invert the common mistake: do not load every tote with Q8000 “because bigger is safer.” Bigger is heavier and often wasteful.

When Q8000 belongs in the tote

Carry Q8000 backup when any of these are true for that route day:

  • Medical-director protocols for booked patients require higher volume / longer run time.
  • Q8001 is on backorder and the medical director approves 1,000 mL substitution.
  • A documented preference card names 1,000 mL as primary for a specific service line (keep those totes labeled separately).

Document the trigger—do not leave backup logic tribal.

Route kit layout (fluids lane)

  • Lane: Primary fluids · Contents: Q8001 case count by stops + buffer · Notes: Rx gate may apply
  • Lane: Backup fluids · Contents: Limited Q8000 · Notes: Labeled; not mixed unlabeled with primary
  • Lane: Sets / access · Contents: Primary set family, catheters, securement · Notes: Usually supplies account
  • Lane: PPE / sharps · Contents: Gloves, sharps, spill pads · Notes: Supplies account
  • Lane: Admin · Contents: Lot/expiry log, preference cards · Notes: Capture on receive and on load

Never treat the fluids lane as interchangeable with PPE. Gate confusion cancels replenishment mid-week.

Credentialing before the first route

  • Confirm Q8001 and Q8000 product-page gates on USA MedPremium.
  • Complete Rx credentialing for licensed ship-to states if required.
  • Separate POs or cart lanes for supplies vs Rx so receiving staff do not mis-file.

USA MedPremium does not sell DEA controlled substances (including ketamine). Keep controlled-substance procurement on authorized channels only—outside this stocking model.

Par math without invented benchmarks

Use your own stop history:

  • Primary par = (avg Q8001 per stop × planned stops) + training/waste buffer you actually observe.
  • Backup par = enough Q8000 to cover the longest booked protocol block that week—not a mirror of primary depth.
  • Recalculate after two route weeks whenever the menu mix changes.

QA failure modes unique to mobile

  • Fluids packed in an unlabeled soft cooler with no lot log.
  • Mixing container systems mid-route without matching sets.
  • Assuming a supplies login clears Q8000/Q8001.
  • Restocking from a clinic closet without transferring expiry visibility to the van log.

Braun EXCEL vs Baxter VIAFLEX (volume equivalents we supply)

USA MedPremium stocks both B. Braun EXCEL and Baxter VIAFLEX 0.9% NaCl bag systems. Match by bag volume, not case-for-case packs:

  • Volume: 1,000 mL · Braun EXCEL (example): Q8000 · Baxter VIAFLEX (example): 2B1324X · Pack note: Cases often differ (e.g., CS/12 vs CS/14)—order by bags needed, not equal case counts
  • Volume: 500 mL · Braun EXCEL (example): Q8001 · Baxter VIAFLEX (example): 2B1323Q · Pack note: Verify live case pack; compare per 500 mL bag

Standardize one container family per set/pump SOP when possible. Either brand may be Rx-gated—confirm each PDP. Do not treat a case of Q8000 as interchangeable 1:1 with a case of 2B1324X without reconciling bag counts.
